The Cocodrilario Keikari and Fuerte de la Contaduría
While in San Blas, we did go on two different excursions. The first was a trip to the Cocodrilario Keikari (Keikari Crocodile Farm) located in Ejido La Palma, just eight kilometers from the port of San Blas. It was interesting for me and terrifying for Luna. For some reason, they were cool with admitting Luna, but Luna wasn’t cool having been admitted. I don’t think she understood the concept of fences, and she probably could not see them – she just saw huge crocodiles opening their fierce, tooth-rich mouths. This would not be our first crocodile encounter. As it turns out, Luna was way smarter than I when it came to crocs than I – but more on that when I finally reach the beach in Nicaragua.
The second excursion was the Fuerte de la Contaduría (Contaduría Fort), atop the Cerro de Basilio (Basilio hill), built in 1760. Memory is a funny thing. I remember just two things about the fort. There is a broken-down basilica on the hill and while I remember the 14 stations of the cross, scattered throughout the property, I remember nothing of the fort proper. My second memory is of the handsome young security guard feeding me a green mango. He told me they were delicious green and that he loved them. I had one bite and threw the remainder away, once I was out of his sight. I’m still not fond of green mangos!
NB: for some reason, I have no photos of the fort and few from Keikari, so I poached some from the internet.
